Trail Description

A nice looped route up Lugnaquilla from Glenmalure. Unfortunately ends with a 2km stretch along a road but at least its quiet and flat!

Park at the carpark at the bridge near the end of the Glenmalure road. Walk across the bridge, and up past the Youth Hostel. Shortly past the hostel, a track doubles back to the left which should be followed. Follow this track for approximately 2km towards the waterfall. This track will stop and a scramble up the right hand side of the waterfall leads to excellent views back down the valley.

once the hanging valley is reached walk west to reach the crest. Follow the crest South leading to the summit of Lugnaquilla.

Depart the summit heading North East skirting around the "South Prison"(?). The track continues due East along the Crest before descends steeply back into Glenmalure where a Style is met and a short bit later a old track. Follow the track down the side of the valley until is crosses the river beside a farm.

Once the road is reached turn left and follow this back to the car for around 2km.

Total time was just under 5 hours at a good pace in ideal conditions.

Great Walk, fanstastically enjoyable climb, zigzagging up to Clohernagh and then on to Lugnaquilla. It was a bit misty when we went so views were intermittent. Coming down Fraughan Rock Glen needs great care because there has been some tree felling adding plenty of obstacles on a steep bank.

Nice trail. Took us about 6 hours to complete with few breaks on the way. Will definitely do again. Great scenery and not too much people in there.
